be you

did you hear?
there's an active player in the nba who just told all of us that he's gay!
woot! wait...

first of all: jason collins. congratulations. what a beautiful time for you! no need to hide this part of your life. no more worrying about your secret slipping out. i can't imagine the relief you must feel. but i bet it's been a wonderful release.
i wish you all happiness upon happiness.

so this is breaking news, huh? for professional sports, i guess.
wait, scratch that.
this is big news for MEN's professional sports.
brittney griner, who just finished her incredible college career and starts her first summer in the WNBA this year, just came out a few weeks ago. and we read the news and thought: yeah. so?

so what's the deal? why is it such a big deal in men's basketball and football for a man to be gay? i honestly don't get it.

i played basketball from 2nd grade through college. many of the friends i played with in middle school and high school, later came out in our college years. easily half of my college teammates were lesbians. and so what?
i didn't feel any different about them because of who they were attracted to. (they didn't judge me for being attracted to guys...especially all those fresh prince lookalikes!)

this morning, i heard a guy on espn say something along the lines of the locker rooms not being ready for openly gay players.
really?
REALLY?

wow.

i wasn't so cocky to think that, because my teammates were attracted to women, they all were checking me out in the locker room. hey, i'm not attracted to every man i see, regardless if he has his shirt off or on. but apparently gay men and women are attracted to every single member of their gender? RIDICULOUS.

way to go, jason. way to be open and give yourself a chance to be comfortable in your own skin. but way to go anyone who can be honest with their friends and family about their life.

be you. be proud. be happy.
and for the rest of you that have odd assumptions about people because of their life choices? go be educated.
oh, and get over yourself. you're probably not as hot as you think you are.
(unless you look like the fresh prince. then you definitely are.)

muse · in the trimming

inspiration can be found anywhere.

by anyone.

in anything.

like old videotape ribbon.

yes.
this dress is made out of ribbon from old movies.

the artist is Rebecca Maxim and she says her work is "less about fashion and more about transforming the by-product of consumption into glamorous objects".

inspiration in by-products? check!

muse · forever 21 fun

i love walking around downtown.
i never know what·who i might see.

so this was a fun surprise.

turn the corner and Forever 21 has models · live and totally regular peeps like us · posing in their window.

so i snapped a couple shots.

excuse the glare. you just never know when something·someone might inspire!

 hi-five!

bemuse · where are they going?

time square.

land of the...

...prom dress?

maybe she was part of some photo shoot or hidden camera show?

maybe.

but jokes on her since patrick clearly stole her limelight!

but she wasn't the only one a bit...overdressed.

work it.

muse · unexpected transportation

waiting at a red light when a business casual, khaki and button-up clad...lad...rolls by on a longboard.

"whaaat? quick, turn right! follow him!"

and since my husband is willing to indulge my weird stalker tendencies, i give you:

Man on Lunch Break on Long Board.

yeah! maneuver around those boring walkers.

thanks for being in the driver seat this day, babe!

friday find · glitter!

they call it the 'GLITTER SALE'! heard of it?

it's only the biggest sale Seattle's Goodwill has each year for the past 29 years!

i heard it's a great sale for low priced, gently-used, designer clothes, shoes and bags.
hmmm.
i've also heard that black friday is a great time to buy big-ticket electronics for a great deal.

that may be true.

but i'm the girl that gets up hours before the sun each day-after-thanksgiving and heads to target for everyday items...like hairbands. [true story: black friday 2009- ran into a friend at target, 5am. he was balancing a giant flat screen tv in his arms and i was waiting to pay for my 20-pack of hair elastics: hey, they disappear so quickly!]

this year i decided to check out the super popular glitter sale.  got there at 715am (doors opened at 9am) and i was the 355th person in line. (turns out fellow style blogger, tina, got in line at 445am and was #54. these people are SERIOUS.)

while i did snag a cute marc jacobs summer-y dress (watch for a future Friday Find featuring this score), i have two AWESOME favorites that i must share immediately!

#1

dear lara, why would you get rid of a shirt signed by a Jackson 5?!?!?

#2

sure, it's as big as my wrist...

ah, glitter sale - i get it now!

bemuse · true commitment

"25 years"

that's what he said when i asked him how long he's been growing his dreads.
twenty...five...years...

the ends of his hair are almost as old as me.

and, as someone who changes my hair color a couple times every year (sometimes significantly, sometimes just a bit), i can't get over how long he's stuck with one style: i'm truly bemused.

but totally impressed with his commitment! i mean, DAMN.

(diggin' his friends look though.)

go on wit' yo bad self!

bemuse·you left the house in that??

my eyes were assaulted at the grocery store.

in the last post, TRISTAN showed how one can wear different patterns in an awesome way.

this guy's pattern clashing?

not.
so.
awesome.

bemuse·i'm sorry

i'm sorry bemuse family.
today's picture is of me.
in shoes.
that i did not buy.

in fact, i'm not sure if anyone has ever bought these shoes. i'm pretty convinced they never should.

but these also came in blue. (in case any of you are swayed by their particular stance on individuality.)

i'm 5'9" so, really, i didn't get them only because i didn't need the extra 4-5 inches.

RIGHT.
